Why do intelligent, capable people continue to repeat patterns they desperately want to change?
Why do some people struggle to trust, even in healthy relationships?
Why do others constantly seek approval, avoid conflict, overwork, procrastinate, or doubt themselves despite knowing these behaviours are holding them back?
Many of us assume that if we understand a problem logically, we should be able to change it.
Yet life often proves otherwise.
This is because much of our story was created long before we were consciously aware of it.
Before Consciousness Came the Psyche
Carl Jung, one of the pioneers of depth psychology, wrote:
“The child had a psychic life before it had consciousness.”
What did he mean?
A newborn child does not have a fully developed sense of identity. It cannot explain its experiences, analyse its emotions, or understand the world intellectually.
Yet the child is already experiencing life.
It feels safety and fear.
Comfort and discomfort.
Connection and separation.
Love and distress.
The child’s mind is constantly learning, absorbing, and adapting long before it can consciously understand what is happening.
While we may not remember many of these early experiences, they can still influence how we see ourselves, other people, and the world around us.
The Stories We Absorb
As children, we naturally look for meaning.
We learn from our environment, our family, our culture, our relationships, and our experiences.
Sometimes the messages we absorb are empowering:
- I am loved.
- My feelings matter.
- I can trust myself.
- Mistakes are part of learning.
Other times, the messages are more limiting:
- I must be perfect to be accepted.
- My needs are a burden.
- I must keep everyone happy.
- It is safer to stay quiet.
- I am not enough.
Most of these beliefs were never consciously chosen.
They were simply conclusions we made based on our experiences.
Over time, those conclusions became part of the story we carried about ourselves.
The Unconscious Continues to Influence Us
Jung went on to say:
“Even the adult still says and does things whose significance he realizes only later, if ever.”
This can be a confronting idea.
We like to believe that we are fully conscious and rational beings.
Yet many of our decisions, reactions, and behaviours are influenced by processes occurring beneath our awareness.
Have you ever:
- Reacted more strongly than a situation seemed to warrant?
- Found yourself repeating the same relationship pattern?
- Avoided an opportunity you genuinely wanted?
- Felt anxious without knowing exactly why?
- Said yes when you wanted to say no?
These experiences may be influenced by unconscious beliefs, emotional memories, or protective strategies that developed much earlier in life.
The conscious mind often sees the behaviour.
The unconscious mind holds the deeper story.
The Good News About Patterns
The purpose of understanding the unconscious is not to blame the past.
It is to create awareness.
Many people believe they are broken because they continue repeating behaviours they dislike.
But what if those behaviours once served an important purpose?
What if your people-pleasing helped you feel accepted?
What if your perfectionism helped you avoid criticism?
What if your self-doubt developed as a way to protect you from disappointment?
When viewed through this lens, many patterns begin to make sense.
They may no longer be serving you, but they were not created without reason.
Understanding this often brings greater compassion for yourself and your journey.
Awareness Creates Freedom
One of the most powerful moments in personal growth occurs when an unconscious pattern becomes conscious.
Instead of asking:
“What’s wrong with me?”
You begin asking:
“What is this pattern trying to protect me from?”
“What belief might be driving this behaviour?”
“When did I first learn this?”
“What new belief would better support the person I want to become?”
Awareness does not automatically create change.
But it creates choice.
And choice is where transformation begins.
You Are More Than Your Story
The stories you absorbed in childhood may have shaped your life, but they do not have to define your future.
You are not your fears.
You are not your limiting beliefs.
You are not the protective strategies you developed years ago.
You are the person who can become aware of them.
And once you become aware of them, you gain the ability to choose differently.
The journey of personal growth is not about becoming someone else.
It is about understanding yourself more deeply.
Because when you understand the story beneath the pattern, you create the opportunity to write a new chapter.
A Question for Reflection
Take a moment to consider:
What recurring pattern in your life might have roots deeper than you realise?
And what might become possible if you approached that pattern with curiosity rather than judgment?
Sometimes the greatest breakthroughs begin not with changing your behaviour, but with understanding the story that shaped it.
